His name was Onesimus. He took money that wasn't his and got all the way to Rome before it caught up with him.
That's where he met Paul, who was in jail at the time. Paul told him about Jesus, and a thief on the run became a free man in a prison cell.
Then Paul wrote to the man Onesimus had robbed. Take him back as family. Don't punish him. Whatever he owes you, send me the bill.
That letter is in the Bible. It's called Philemon. One page.
WHAT ARE THE ODDS OF ANY OF THAT?
Paul spent years arresting Christians. Philemon was a businessman with no use for religion. Onesimus was hiding in a foreign city. All three ended up following Jesus, and none of them were headed that way.
Paul was in that city three years before Philemon believed anything. So if you've been praying about someone for years, the wait isn't a no.
God got to Onesimus while he was still running. Not after he cleaned up.
And Paul tells Philemon to eat the cost because Jesus already ate a bigger one for him. That's what makes forgiving a real debt possible instead of just something you're supposed to do.
